St John's Church Chevington - Churchyard Monumental Inscriptions

The gravestones (apart from three) have been removed from their original positions and placed along the west and north walls of the churchyard. Trees and other vegetation have obscured a number of stones, leaving us with about 90%, which are transcribed here. Images of the church itself are on this page.


	ALDERSON	James Simpson, Eleanor	[Part stone only, primary inscription missing] ...Also of the above named James Simpson Alderson, died April 1?th 1909 aged 81 years. Eleanor Alderson, daughter of the above died June 7th 1932.

	ANDERSON	William George, George, Ann	In Loving memory of William George, beloved husband of Ann Anderson, who died at Swarland Terrace, Jan 8th 1901, aged 38 years. Also of George, their son, who was killed in France June 28th 1915, aged 21½years. He hath done what he could. Also the above Ann Anderson, who died Jan 9th 1925 aged 68 years.

	ALLAN	Thomas, Grace, Jane, Mark	In affectionate remembrance of Thomas Allan, the beloved husband of Grace Allan, who died at Broomhill Dec 18th 1887 aged 53 years. Mark, son of the above died March 22nd 1885, aged 20 years. Jane, daughter of the above who died at Togston Terrace Dec 30 1891 aged 28 years. Also Grace Allan who departed this life June 21st 1914 aged 80 years.

	BELL	Emma Jane	In affectionate remembrance of Emma Jane, the dearly beloved wife of John Bell who died at South Broomhill Nov 29th 1892 aged 31 years.

	BELL	Robert, Ann	In loving memory of Robert, the beloved husband of Ann Bell who died at Togston Crescent, March 24 1912 aged 80 years. Also of the above Ann Bell who died at Togston Crescent, Jan 4 1921 aged 83 years & 10 months.

	BELL	John	In Memory of John Bell, who died at Acklington June 17th 1862 aged 68 years.

	BELL	George, Leslie	...George Bell, who died at Broomhill February ? 1889 aged 58 years. Also of Margaret, his wife who died at Broomhill December ? 1890 aged 60 years. Also of Leslie, their son who died February 10th 1865 aged 3½ years

	BOWEY	William	In loving memory of William Bowey who died at Green Lane, Broomhill, August 12 1900, aged 79 years. Also of Elizabeth, his wife who died at Togston, March 25 1902 aged 78 years.

	BURN	Edward Henry	[Fragment of stone]...Aug 17th 1883, aged 27 years. The above Edward Henry Burn, who died Nov 11th 1896 aged 63 years.

	BROWN	Thomas, Isabella, Margaret	In loving memory of Thomas Brown, who died at Widdrington Oct 24 1886 aged 66 years. And of Isabella, his wife who died at West Chevington April 2 1879. Also of Margaret, their daughter who died at Hamsterly April 5 1889 age 44 years.

	CHRISP	Robert, Margaret, George, Thomas	Sacred to the memory of Robert, son of Thomas & Margaret Chrisp, who died at Hadstone December 21st 1865 aged ? years. Also the above Margaret Chrisp, who died at West Sleekburn Farm Oct. 13th 1877 aged 53 years. She died in Jesus and is bless'd, how sweet her slumbers are; from sufferings and from sin releas'd, and freed from every care. Also of George, their son who died Oct 20th 1878 aged 23 years. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. [and of] Robert, son of the above died June 21st 1892 aged 24 years. We cannot lord thy purpose see, but all is well that's done by thee. 	GEACH	Mary Ann, Dinah	In affectionate remembrance of Mary Ann, the beloved wife of William Geach daughter of Matthew & Rachel Robertson of Broomhill Colliery who died June 3 1885 aged 20 years. Dinah, her sister died Oct 3 1873 aged 3 years.

	GEE	Mary Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Henry	In Memory of Mary Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Gee, and daughter of the late Henry & Isabella Muers, who died at Broomhill, Oct 17th 1863, aged 35 years. Mary Anne, their daughter died May 4th 1863, aged 11 months. Henry, their son died March 10th 1864 aged 4 years.

A light is from our household gone, a voice we loved is stilled, a place is vacant at our hearth, which never can be filled. Also of Mary, his wife, who died at Togston Crescent Oct 5th 1895 aged 54 years. Also of Eleanor Jane, daughter of the above, and beloved wife of James Walker, of Chevington Drift who died April 9th 1907, aged 37 years. 	MOLE	Joseph, George, John William	Thy will be done. Erected by Joseph & Elizabeth Ann Mole, of Chevington Station, to the memory of their beloved children. Joseph, died Sept 17 1867, in infancy. George, died March 19 1876, aged 3 years and 5 months. These lovely buds, so young and fair, called home by early doom, just came to show how fair such flowers in paradise would bloom. Also John William Mole, died June 19th 1892, aged 32 years, interred at Alnwick.

	NESBIT	Agnes	In affectionate remembrance of Agnes Nesbit, the beloved wife of John Nesbit, who died April 25th 1887, aged 66 years. We cannot call a day our own, No nor a single hour; For death may cut the strongest down, And blast the fairest flower.

	OLIVER	Mary Jane, Eleanor, Mary	in loving memory of Mary Jane, the beloved daughter of Thomas & Mary Oliver, died at South Broomhill, May 18th 1895 aged 15 years. Also John Thomas their son died at North Broomhill June 15th 1895 aged 16 years. Also Mary Jane their daughter died Sept 18th 1886 aged 1 year.

	SANDERSON	Alexander, Jane	In loving memory of Alexander, the beloved husband of Margaret Sanderson, died at South Broomhill, Dec. 13th 1889 aged 32 years. Jane their daughter died at Togston Crescent July 13th 1896 aged 4 years & 10 months.

	SCOTT	Mary Ann	In affectionate remembrance of Mary Ann Scott, the beloved daughter of Andrew & Frances Scott of Broomhill, who died Nov. 10th 1873 Aged 16 years.

	SHEPHERD	Isabel, Timothy	In loving memory of Isabel, the beloved wife of Timothy Shepherd, died at North Broomhill, January 24th 1896, aged 52 years. Also the above Timothy Shepherd, who died Dec. 29th 1911, aged 72 years.
