10. SUMMARY OF PILOT'S REPORT (or a description of circumstances which terminated in the accident if the pilots report is not available). In cases of engine failure information should be given as to the behaviour of the engine and manipulation of the engine controls immediately before failure.

Whilst engaged on target towing, I approached the aerodrome to drop my second drogue. As there were aircraft parked close to the dropping run and to the leeward side, I decided to drop lower than usual. I could not make a straight run as this would have cut across the line of approach of landing aircraft and in trying to straighten out more quickly than usual, I realised that I was getting too low. I dropped my hand to the trimmer and at that moment the aircraft nosed down and the landing wheel hit the ground buckling the port wheel. I landed on the grass on the drome and when the aircraft had almost come to a standstill it turned over on its nose and then on its back.

11. REPORT BY APPROPRIATE SPECIALIST OFFICERS (A. E. Nav., &c.) :(i) If technical failure is involved information as to the nature and cause of the failure is required; precise information as to the extent of the damage arising as a result of this failure is not required. (ii) If the non-embodiment of an authorised modification is considered to have contributed to the accident, the serial number of the modification and reason for non-embodiment should be stated.

At 15.45 hrs. on 23.7.43 I was informed by telephone that a Lysander aircraft was about to force land on the aerodrome. The aircraft in question T.1747 made a normal landing, but at the end of its run 'nosed over' on to its back. This was due to damage previously sustained by the port wheel and undercarriage.
Damage:- Port and starboard main planes, propeller, engine shock loaded.

12. REMARKS BY UNIT COMMANDER (to be given under three separate headings) :-

PART C. General remarks (including any recommendation with with regard to personnel, training, airframes, engines, accessories, etc., and notes of any action taken as a result of this incident)

(a) Pilot came down too low to release drogue which caught a blister hanger. This caused the aircraft to dive slightly, and the landing wheels bounced on the perimeter track - thereby causing damage to the undercarriage.

(b) Pilot unable to make a straight approach to drogue dropping areas, as this would have entailed coming across line of approach of landing aircraft.

(c) Aircraft in excellent condition generally, but pilot had only 4½ hours towing experience on this type.
