The Lawson-Smith brothers.

 

The Land on which the Amble Memorial stands was given by Edward Maule Lawson-Smith,  second son of  Reverend Edward Lawson of Longhirst. This land, which was part of a large estate at Amble and Togston, was inherited by him in 1862 from his ancestor Mr. T. G. Smith. In 1880 Edward Lawson also adopted the Smith surname. Lawson-Smith's two sons, John and Thomas are mentioned on the memorial dedication panel, they were killed within 12 days of each other in 1914.

 

   

Lieutenant John Lawson-Smith, 1st Bn. West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own). Killed in Action 20th October 1914 aged 22. Son of Mr. E.M. Lawson-Smith, of Colton Lodge, Tadcaster, Yorks. Commemorated Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. (Commonwealth War Graves Commission)

 

 

 

LAWSON-SMITH, JOHN, Lieutenant 1st Battalion. West Yorkshire Regiment, youngest son of Edward Maule Lawson-Smith, of Colton Lodge, Tadcaster, B.A., J.P., by his wife, Ethel Mary, daughter of the late Gen. Sir William Davies ; born Colton, co. York, 24 March, 1892 ; educated. Warren Hill, Eastbourne; Stubbington (Foster's); Royal Naval College, Osborne (Cadet. 1902-3) ; Repton, and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst ; gazetted 2nd Lieut. West Yorkshire Regiment, 3 Sept. 1913 and promoted Lieut. Oct. 1914 : went to France in Sept. 1914, and was killed in action near Bois Grenier, 20-21 Oct. following; unm. He was mentioned in Field Marshall  Sir John (now Lord) French's Despatch of 20 Nov. 1914 [London Gazette, 17 Feb. 1915]. for gallant and distinguished service in the field. His brother. Lieutenant T. E. Lawson-Smith, was killed in action, 30-31 Oct. 1914.  (de Ruvigny's Roll of Honour)

Lieutenant Thomas Edward Lawson-Smith, 13th Hussars. Killed in Action, 1st November 1914 aged 25. Son of Edward Maule Lawson-Smith, of Colton Lodge, Tadcaster, Yorks., and the late Ethel Mary Lawson-Smith. Commemorated Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial Belgium. (Commonwealth War Graves Commission)


Lieutenant Thomas Edward Lawson-Smith, 13th Hussars, was born in 1889 entered the 13th Hussars 1909, and was promoted Lieutenant in 1913. A son of Mr E.M. Lawson Smith of Togston and Amble, Northumberland, he was educated at Harrow and Sandhurst. (The Times Nov 11th 1914)

B.A., J.P.. by his wife, Ethel Mary, daughter of the late Gen. Sir William Davies ; b. Colton, co. York. 14 March. 1889 ; educated. Warren Hill, Eastbourne. Stubbington (Foster's), Harrow, and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst; gazetted 2nd Lieut., 13th Hussars. 15 Sept. 1909, and promoted Lieut. 6 Dec. 1913 ; went to France attached to the 11th Hussars, Oct. 1914. and was killed in action near Messines,

:30-31 Oct. following; unm. HIs brother. Lieut. John Lawson-Smith was killed in action, 20-21 Oct. 1914 (de Ruvigny's Roll of Honour)
