Many thanks to John Hardy of Red Row for
allowing us to include his own research on the more difficult to
identify casualties on the memorial (marked thus*). John has now had
published two books on the men commemorated here; "By the Green of the
Spring" the Great War volume, and "In the Quiet Lane" the Second World
War volume. John's inspiration came from the sacrifice and remembrance
of his own ancestor Gladstone Hardy (see below). |

| Willm. Henderson |
* Willm. Henderson; there is a local story which claims that W.
Henderson's inclusion on the Chevington Memorial was a mistake. I
can still remember as a youngster a guy named William 'Larkie'
Henderson who had lost part of a leg in the war. His son told me his
dad believed he had been put on the memorial in error. Another
possibility is that William Henderson could have been a
duplicate of James William Henderson as I have seen his obituary in
which he was named as Willie Henderson, maybe his name was put on
twice.

Arthur Johnson, Private 7154, B Coy. 1/7th
Battalion Duke of Wellington's (East Riding) Regiment, died Sunday

Andrew Johnstone (horsekeeper) and family are living at Broomhill.
His wife is Ann Masters Johnstone, later documented on CWGC as

Arthur's father's name was put on the memorial at Chevington
instead.

The Soldier.
If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.
And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.
Rupert Brooke. |
