AMBLE HARBOUR
BROOMHILL COAL COMPANY BOAT CREWS 1939 |
When the
National Register was compiled in 1939 at the outbreak of the Second
World War the Broomhill Coal Company boats were in harbour along
with the dredger, the Clifton Hall and the S/S Collier. Many of
these ships and the men would not survive the War. The men are
remembered on the Amble War Memorial and the Mercantile Marine
Memorial at Tower Hill, London. The
S/S Togston was torpedoed
and sunk on the 8th March 1941 off the Norfolk coast.
Eight of the nineteen crew were lost. The
S/S Chevington was
in convoy when it was
torpedoed and sunk on the 12th October 1941, again off
the Norfolk coast. Seven crew and two gunners lost their lives. The
S/S Hauxley was in convoy
when it was torpedoed. It was taken in tow but sank on the 17th
October 1940 off the Norfolk coast. One crew member lost his life. The dredger
S/S Coquet Mouth hit a mine just outside Amble Harbour on the 4th
July 1940. The majority of the crew were saved but three lost their
lives. The
MV Clifton Hall was
torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine in the Red Sea on the 12th
June 1942. One Amble crew member lost his life. Those who
died in World War II and who are listed below are marked by an
asterisk.
